Not Enough To Save Them: 'Teen Mom' Jenelle Evans & Fiancé Nathan Griffith Were 'Working' On Troubled Relationship In Couples Therapy Before Arrest

MTV star Jenelle Evans' latest attempt at happily ever after went down in flames on Wednesday night when her fiancé Nathan Griffith was arrested for criminal domestic violence at her Myrtle Beach home. And though the Teen Mom 2 star had been going through a rough patch with her baby daddy Griffith for weeks before the incident, RadarOnline.com has exclusively learned they were "working on" their relationship before it all fell apart.
Evans and Griffith "didn't split" in the days before their brutal fight, a source close to Evans insisted, despite RadarOnline.com's report that Griffith had been secretly chatting with another woman.
Instead, the young parents, whose baby son Kaiser will turn one in June, were "working on their relationship, that's all," according to the source.
Another friend of Evans confirmed they had been "going to couples counseling and taking space from each other."
Before the fight that ended with Griffith in jail, it seemed the couple might be able to make it work as they both focused on making their own lives better.
"Jenelle has been spending her days at school or with her kids," the friend said. "Meanwhile, Nathan has been doing his own thing during the day."
But before long, the relationship imploded amid screaming fights and calls to the cops. Though the explosive end is shocking, an insider insisted it had nothing to do with substance abuse -- which has played a role in Evans' past disastrous relationships.
"Jenelle has a drug test coming up next week for school and she's sober as sober can be," the source insisted. The test will be administered relating to Evans' externship to show to future employers that she is clean.
As RadarOnline.com previously reported, the couple had been fighting in recent weeks, despite their newly engaged status.
"Nathan is f***ing crazy. He loses his mind over every little thing that Jenelle does," a source previously told RadarOnline.com.
