Marc Anthony’s everlasting success especially sticks out in a music business has been full of cautionary tales, fallen stars and flashes-in-the-pan, and in June’s issue of MEN’S FITNESS, the Grammy-winning singer opens up on the keys to his longevity and professionalism.
“I didn’t fall into the stereotypical trappings, you understand? I take care of myself. More than anything, just emotionally,” the singer tells MEN’S FITNESS. “I’m not the go-out-and-party-kind-of-guy, I’m not the drug guy, I’m not the hard liquor guy, I’m not the weed guy, I’m not … and I’ve never been.
“People who are excited to be famous they sort of go through that phase. A lot of them get stuck and all f*cked up. I just knew that there was more to enjoy in the silence of things.”
Anthony — who clarified that he wasn’t talking about specific individuals, but rather speaking in generals — said in that some cases, it’s just a matter of getting things out of your system.
“There’s no club that you can invite me to that’s going to make me want to leave my house,” Anthony, 45, explained. “There’s no number of women, there’s no number of yachts or private whatever. I’ve been there. I think it’s necessary to live it, but you have to have a mechanism to snap out of it and I think that’s good support all the way around.
“I survived it and I prefer my children, I prefer to stand on my feet, I prefer finding the silence. You know, get some quiet corner and shut up.”
In the insightful exchange, the always-immaculately-styled Anthony also shares an amusing anecdote about how he was ex-wife Jennifer Lopez’s go to on what to wear.
“You know, what’s funny is that she would ask me: she’d have like five people come with her to decide what to wear, but she’d be like, ‘Ask Marc, he usually gets it right,’” the “I Need To Know” singer recalled. “Then I’d come in and I’d be like, ‘No, not that one.’
“Then, you read the next week in the paper, ‘Oh she nailed it.’ We had a good thing: I get fashion.”
