'Blade Runner' Oscar Pistorius Indicted: Witnesses Heard Screams, Then Shots, Prosecutors Say

Witnesses near Oscar Pistorius' fatal Feb. 14 shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp said they heard a woman's screams, then gunshots, prosecutors said during the athlete's indictment in South Africa's Pretoria Magistrate's Court Monday.

"Some of the state witnesses heard a woman scream, followed by moments of silence, then heard gunshots and then more screaming," prosecutors said in an 11-page indictment, which includes statements from some 107 witnesses.

Pistorius was seen crying in the court Monday, a day that would have marked Steenkamp's 30th birthday; asked if he was OK, he said, "Under the circumstances, ja (yes)."

As we previously reported, as the 26-year-old athlete is accused of premeditated murder in the 29-year-old model's death, as prosecutors said he shot to kill her as she hid in a bathroom following a violent Valentine's Day argument.

Pistorius gained international fame as the first-ever double-amputee runner in Olympic competition, garnering the nickname, the "Blade Runner."

Pistorius' premeditated murder trial is set for March 3, 2014. Should be convicted of premeditated murder, he could be sentenced up to life, with a 25-year minimum sentence. If convicted of murder, he could face up to 15 years behind bars.
