Known as the pioneer of television advice shows, psychologist Dr. Joyce Brothers died on Monday in New York City at the age of 85, RadarOnline.com is reporting.

The cause of death was not immediately made public but her longtime publicist Sanford Brokaw confirmed her passing to the public.

Before carving out a prolific career as a syndicated columnist, author, and television and film personality, Brothers first gained fame appearing on The $64,000 Question in 1955 when she became only woman to win the game show's top prize after memorizing 20 volumes of a boxing encyclopedia for her area of expertise.

Three years later Brothers was back on the air at a New York-based NBC affiliate giving advice on love, marriage, sex and child-rearing, and its success led to a late-night spin-off with now infamous adult themes.

She went on to publish 15 books and make cameo appearances on TV classics including Happy DaysThe Simpsons, and Johnny Carson'The Tonight Show — which she visited nearly 100 times!

Along with her shows that went through a series of name changes over the years, from The Dr. Joyce Brothers Show to Consult Dr. Brothers to Tell Me, Dr. Brothers to Ask Dr. Brothers to Living Easy with Dr. Joyce Brothers, the celebrity psychologist also wrote a monthly column in Good Housekeeping magazine for almost four decades.
