Apolo Anton Ohno and Emmitt Smith were both sent home, leaving Melissa RycroftShawn Johnson and Kelly Monaco as this season's three finalists.

"This competition was hard from the beginning, and Karina's a champion," Apolo, 30, said. "I learned so much about her. She's taught me so much about myself. This show is amazing for far beyond what the mirror ball trophy has in store for people.

"Every single person who does this show is a champion: It forces you to become a champion in your own right. It forces you to become stronger. You become more confident. It's a blessing."

The bad trend for sportsmen continued later in the show, when the NFL's all-time rushing leader Emmitt Smith was tackled by viewer votes.

The Dallas Cowboy great, 43, hailed partner Cheryl Burke in his farewell speech.

"It's been a tremendous experience," the show's third season champ said. "Cheryl's been a great partner. She has pushed me to another level."

The three-time Super Bowl winner said that while "season three was something else…this right here takes it to the top."
