Ernest Borgnine, one of the most memorable character actors ever, has died at the age of 95.

Nobody played the heavy like Borgnine and he soared to stardom in classics like From Here to Eternity and The Wild Bunch. But his Academy Award came for his starring role as the sweet, lonely butcher in Marty, and he took TV by storm as a comic actor in McHale's Navy.

A Navy-vet himself, Borgnine never retired from acting. He became the oldest actor to ever receive a Golden Globe nomination in 2007, and he was nominated for an Emmy for his appearances on ER.
