After his former lawyers admitted to having “lost track” of Trayvon Martin’s shooter, George Zimmerman is now in custody and facing charges of second degree murder.

Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey announced the formal charges at the state attorney's office in Jacksonville, Florida on Wednesday afternoon, where she pledged, “We will continue to seek the truth.”

The 28-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer could face life in prison and could be hit with up to $10,000 in fines for the shooting death of the 17-year-old from Sanford, Florida that occurred 45 days ago and has caused outrage across the country since.

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, Zimmerman’s attorneys explained on Tuesday that they were withdrawing their legal representation after they had “lost track” of him.

His new lawyer, Mark O'Mara, revealed that his client surrendered to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement earlier on Wednesday, reported CNN.com. The attorney will now be able to request a bond at an upcoming hearing.

Martin was killed by Zimmerman as he was walking through a gated Florida community on his way to his father's girlfriend's home, carrying Skittles and iced tea on February 26.
