George Clooney, Brad Pitt, & Meryl Streep All Get Oscar Nominations While Hugo, The Artist Lead The Pack

The nominees for the 84th Academy Awards were announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Tuesday in Beverly Hills, and while Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Brad Pitt got their expected nods, it was Martin Scorsese's Hugo that led the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Picture, with The Artist right on its tail with ten nods.

Nominees for best picture are: Hugo; The Artist; The Descendants; Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close; The Help; Midnight in Paris; Moneyball; The Tree of Life; and War Horse.

Among the best director picks nominees are Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist; Alexander Payne for The Descendants; Scorsese for Hugo; Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris; Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life.

The nominees for Best Actress are Glenn Close in Albert Nobbs; Viola Davis in The Help; Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady; and Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn. (Notably snubbed was Tilda Swinton, whose performance in We Need to Talk About Kevin was trumpeted by critics as a possible contender to Streep's moving portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.)

Candidates for Best Actor include Demián Bichir for A Better Life; George Clooney for The Descendants; Jean Dujardin for The Artist; Gary Oldman for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy; and Brad Pitt for Moneyball.

The nominees for Best Supporting Actress are: Octavia Spencer for The Help; Berenice Bejo for The Artist; Jessica Chastain for The Help; Janet McTeer for Albert Nobbs; and Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids.
