The first of 1,500 pairs of Nike Air Mags, like the ones famously worn by Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future II, sold for $37,500 during an auction at Los Angeles' Montalban Theater on Thursday night.

Along with the kicks -- nicknamed “McFlys” -- the winner of the auction, hosted by E! personality/actor Joel McHale, won a "plutonium case" -- a relevant prop from the 1989 hit.

Tinker Hatfield, who played a role in designing the in-demand footwear, said "It hasn't gone unnoted by us that there is something special about that shoe and, of course, the movie.”

The limited-edition, movie-inspired sneakers are available on eBay; for the next nine days, beginning at 8:30 pm PT, 150 pairs of the shoes will be auctioned on the site each night.

The proceeds of the shoe sales will be forwarded to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

"The project is exciting to me because it brings together three very passionate audiences: the Parkinson's community, sneakerheads and Back to the Future fans," Fox, 50, said in a statement. "With their support we can accelerate our objective of finding a cure for Parkinson's."
