Charlie Sheen's ex-wife, Brooke Mueller, left Los Angeles International Airport Monday morning for a controversial rehabilitation program in Cancun, Mexico, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

Mueller left around 7:40 a.m., with her personal physician, who will oversee her treatment in Mexico. Mueller has decided to proceed with an addiction program that isn't legal in the U.S. Mueller will be taking ibogaine, which is supposed to stop cravings for drugs.

Many U.S. medical experts concur about the dangers associated with ibogaine and the hallucinogen is classified as a Controlled Substance in the U.S. Ibogaine is approved in other countries, however, including Mexico, Canada, and elsewhere for the treatment of drug addicts.

"I have had this experience with dozens of patients, but most disturbingly these patients had persistent mood and personality changes," Dr. Drew Pinsky tells RadarOnline.com.

Mueller was discharged from a Los Angeles hospital Sunday night and checked into a hotel before leaving for Cancun on Monday morning. "Brooke is absolutely desperate. She wants to be sober, and she thinks that this could be just the thing that will do it. Brooke is aware of the dangers of ibogaine, but she is going to proceed anyway," a source close to the situation tells us.

Brooke will be in Mexico for seven days. Her children, Bob and Max, are being cared for by Brooke's aunt and nanny.
