Golf Legend Seve Ballesteros Loses Battle With Brain Cancer

The golf world lost a legend Saturday when Seve Ballesteros died from brain cancer at his home in Pedrena, Spain.

The 54-year-old player passed away from respiratory problems at 2.10 am local time surrounded by his close family. The two-time Masters champion was diagnosed with a brain tumor in October 2008 after fainting in Madrid airport  He later underwent four separate operations and chemotherapy in a failed attempt to beat the devastating disease.

There was an outpouring of support on today as players around the globe paid tribute to their fallen competitor and friend.

"Seve was one of the most talented and excited golfers to ever play the game," Tiger Woods tweeted. "His creativity and inventiveness on the golf course may never be surpassed. His death came much too soon."

The world's number one golfer, Lee Westwood wrote on Twitter: "It's a sad day. Lost an inspiration, genius, rolel model, hero and friend."

Jack Nicklaus shared their sentiments, saying: "Today, golf lost a great champion and a great friend. We also lost a great entertainer and ambassador for our sport. Seve's enthusiasm was just unmatched by anybody I think that ever played the game."
