CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric stopped short on confirming her future plans, but she did open up a lot to  her friend and former Today co-anchor Matt Lauer about what type of project she'd be interested in doing in the future in her return to The Today Show on Wednesday to promote her new book.

Couric, who left the NBC morning franchise five years ago, admitted she's "not sure" about what she wants to do when her CBS contract expires in June, but she's "really excited about the future."

"I love doing my job at the CBS Evening News. I really do... and I just don't know."

Lauer asked Couric if she's already made up her mind, but just doesn't want to announce her decision yet.

"No, I really haven't," Couric said. "I'm in the middle of figuring out where would be the best place for me, what would be the best job for me.

"What might appeal to me? Just the creative freedom to pick subjects, to dig deep, to have a smart intelligent conversation. And, you know me, Matt. I'm animated," she said. "That's the kind of person I am.”

Couric said for her next project, "It might be nice for me to have a little more wiggle room to show my personality," joking, "You know I'm a good dancer," a sly reference to a possible program in the style of talk show maven Ellen DeGeneres.

"A smart conversation about a whole host of subjects would be really fun,” Couric said. “I'm obviously interested in medical and health information. I'm interested in controversial subjects and social issues. I'm interested in politics. I think the panoply and the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and dig into those topics is appealing."

Couric said she's going to be careful in the process, as she doesn't "want to feel pressured by outside forces to make a decision quickly.

"I want to be methodical and smart about it," she said, telling Lauer, "You're the most methodical person I know; you really think things through -- I want to take a page from that."

Couric was on the show to promote her new book The Best Advice I Ever Got, which is available in stores now.
