Lindsay Lohan caught a major break on Friday when Judge Elden Fox chose not to send her to jail and ordered her to stay in rehab at the Betty Ford Center.

RadarOnline.com was in the courtroom as Judge Fox decided Lindsay’s fate. There was a very good chance the judge was going to put Lindsay behind bars.

But instead, Lindsay was ordered to stay at Betty Ford until Jan. 3, 2011. The district attorney wanted Lindsay to do 180 days of hard time behind bars and said, “we have not gotten her attention yet.”

Lindsay’s SCRAM bracelet will be removed, per the judge’s orders. He said: “If you can make it until Feb. 25, I will make it unsupervised probation. You can put this long episode behind you if you are serious about this.”

The judge was blunt with Lindsay at one point, telling her: “You are an addict and I’m not going to be manipulated.”

Lindsay’s lawyer admitted that Lohan’s previous dirty test result was accurate.

Lohan will be randomly tested for drugs and alcohol when she is released from Betty Ford.

The judge made a point of keeping Lindsay in rehab through the holidays. “There is a reason for that,” he said in court. Judge Fox also said he was new to “this sort of rodeo.”

Judge Fox said that failure to comply with the court’s order would result in the district attorney’s recommendation being implemented – that’s 180 days behind bars!

Lindsay’s parents Dina and Michael were both in the courtroom.

Lohan submitted a hand-written letter to the judge, but he did not read it in open court. Lindsay’s attorney Shawn Chapman Holley said the probation report recommended that she stay in treatment. The lawyer also said that relapse is part of recovery.

A report from the Betty Ford Center given to the judge was positive toward Lohan and her recovery.

Lindsay wore jeans to court and had her hair in a ponytail.

It was a day full of drama and it began early. Shortly after 8 am PT, Lindsay’s father michael asked a bailiff for permission to talk to Shawn Chapman Holley. Michael was in the hallway and the bailiff shut the door on him. On the other side of that door was Holley with Lindsay.

The judge ordered her back into court on Feb. 25, 2011.

Lohan, 24, has been at the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California since September 28, where she's been undergoing treatment for cocaine addiction - a story that RadarOnline.com was first to report.

Legal woes have kept Lindsay the focus of headlines far more than her stagnant acting career. In the past several months she has had arrest warrants issued for her, been jailed and put into treatment.

Lindsay failed a drug test just three weeks after her release from UCLA Medical Center in August. She appeared in court and was immediately remanded to custody at Lynwood Correctional Facility. Her lawyer filed an appeal, however, and she was released after several hours. Lindsay then voluntarily checked into the Betty Ford Center.

As RadarOnline.com reported exclusively on Wednesday, Judge Fox refused to meet with Lindsay's lawyer and the District Attorney before Friday's hearing.

Meanwhile, as RadarOnline.com also previously reported, the Machete actress got a special visitor at the Betty Ford Center on Wednesday, when Lindsay's mom Dina stopped by for a memorable trip.

A source close to the Lohan family told RadarOnline.com that Dina spent an emotional day with Lindsay at the treatment center. The mother and daughter reunited for the first time since Lindsay checked herself into rehab.
