Old 97's: An American Treasure

You can’t get much more American than Texas’s beloved Old 97’s, and appropriately the band celebrates the 4th of July in New York City with a celebratory show at South Street Seaport that is open to everyone.
The Dallas-based four-piece -- led by alt-country pin-up-of-sorts Rhett Miller -- continues to tour throughout the month, bringing both their upbeat and soothing sounds of countrified pop-rock from one coast to the other, including two more free shows, one in Chicago and the other in San Francisco, where the tour wraps up on August 5th.
The band’s new EP, entitled Mimeograph, brings the Old 97’s touch to four covers, the classics Rocks Off by The Rolling Stones and Five Years by David Bowie, along with R.E.M.’s bewitching Driver 8 and, rather unexpectedly, For The Girl by young Glaswegian rock trio The Fratellis. The EP can only be bought at the band’s shows or on their website, old97s.com.
In other Old 97’s news, the band has been hard at work on their upcoming album, The Grand Theatre, which Miller says is inspired by The Clash’s London Calling. The album is expected out in October.
