Charlie Sheen’s legal team and the Aspen District Attorney’s office are close to reaching a plea deal over his domestic violence case, RadarOnline.com has learned.

Talks had stalled between the two sides but now it looks like a deal could be struck before their next court appearance on August 2.

According to a source, Sheen’s lawyer Yale Galanter is “pleased” with the progress currently being made in the case.

The source told RadarOnline.com: “Yale believes that the two sides are getting close – he has struck up a good relationship with the District Attorney’s office despite their differences in the past.”

Despite the current hope of resolution, the source says anything could still happen: “Yale’s optimistic that they can reach a deal before they step in court on August 2 but he felt the same way before the last court appearance when things did not work out.”

Charlie Sheen

The Aspen District Attorney’s office had offered the actor thirty days in jail (which could have been reduced to fifteen for good behavior) and participation in a work release program. However, at the last minute, Sheen was deemed ineligible for the program which would have allowed him to spend the day outside of the jail working at a local theatre. Sheen also believed he would have been allowed to smoke, which turned out not to be the case.

RadarOnline.com understands that the Two and a Half Men star and his legal team are now trying to make a deal for no jail time but will accept probation. RadarOnline.com believes that there are two reasons Charlie is now willing to accept probation: because he feels he can't go without smoking and that he wants to help Brooke Mueller take care of their twin boys.

The source says it is the terms of this probation that is the current major sticking point.
