The sting began when van der Sloot contacted a representative of Beth Holloway’s mom and offered to sell her information about how her daughter died and where her remains could be found, CNN.com is reporting. After alerting the FBI, the Holloway rep met van der Sloot in Aruba and handed over $10,000 in cash.

That was followed by a wire transfer of another $15,000 from “Birmingham, Alabama to the Netherlands,” according to the legal docs.

The FBI funded the sting operation, and the information van der Sloot provided turned out to be false.

Van der Sloot is now under arrest in Peru for the murder of a local woman, Stephany Flores, who died in his hotel room five years to the day after Natalee disappeared in Aruba while on vacation with friends.
