Cyndi Lauper is back and as original as ever. After one of her biggest hits, “True Colors”, was prominently featured in Sex and the City 2, and she charmed audiences on Celebrity Apprentice, the timing couldn’t be better for a return from the ever-innovative ‘80s icon.

On her new album, Memphis Blues, Cyndi collaborates with blues greats B.B. King, Allen Toussaint and Ann Peebles. “The blues are the roots of everything I’ve ever sung,” Cyndi said recently, “and America is kinda going through the blues right now.”

America is also celebrating what a one-of-a-kind artist Cyndi, now 56, is. When Cyndi met President Obama at the White House—a few nights after her pal Lady Gaga met him a few nights prior—she was thrilled with his greeting.  “I said, ‘So I heard you opened for Gaga at the Human Rights Campaign Fund gala. How was it?’” Cyndi said. “He smiled and said, ‘She stole all your moves. You’re the original.’”

And Cyndi—who also recently received props from 50 Cent for her original style—has signed on to do an upcoming reality show. “It’s early days, but I definitely want it to have some comedy,” she said of the project. “Nobody wants me to be serious, me included.”

Cyndi continues to be a creative force in music and fashion, always mixing things up. “I still want to try new things,” she said. “Anything that is striking and otherworldly.”

Cyndi is taking Memphis Blues on the road all summer. Check out dates at cyndilauper.com/dates.
