The songs of Frank Sinatra didn't bode well for American Idol contestant Aaron Kelly who was eliminated from the show Wednesday night.

After his mediocre rendition of Fly Me to the Moon on Tuesday’s performance show, the youngest member in the competition was ousted in a quiet and bittersweet goodbye. There were no tears, as with past Idol eliminations, but a simple farewell to a young performer who needed just a bit more time to grow.

The night was brought to a climax when Ryan Seacrest pitted favorite Crystal Bowersox and Casey James against Mike Lynch and Kelly. As expected, James and Bowersox were given quick reprieves. When Lynch (the lone Idol saved by the judges in a past elimination night) was told he was not going home, he wrapped Kelly in his arms, wishing the younger singer the best future.

From there, the 17-year old belted out a slightly updated version of Fly Me to the Moon as his swan song- an interesting choice given that it was the very song that got him ousted.

Aside from the elimination drama, Wednesday's Idol seemed rather flat despite the presence of  pop phenom Lady Gaga and this week’s mentor Harry Connick, Jr.  Gaga sang her hit single Alejandro in a fishnet onesie to a humdrum beat, while Connick Jr. crooned his heart out to the Beatles jam , And I Love Her.

For the rest of the show, the remaining Idol cast sang a mix of both Sinatra and Connick Jr. songs that, unfortunately, sounded tired and uninspired.

Next week, watch out for the Final Four - Lee DeWyze, Lynche, James and Bowersox - battle each other in “songs from the cinema” with guest mentor Jamie Foxx.
