Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan believes  that playing tragic porn star Linda Lovelace can kick-start her faltering career and put her back on the Hollywood map, RadarOnline.com can exclusively reveal.

Lohan is lined-up to play Lovelace in director Matthew Wilde’s drama Inferno and she has told close friends that she can’t wait to take-on the controversial role.

Lovelace (real name Linda Boreman) is best known as the actress who starred in the 1972 hard core movie Deep Throat which went on to become the most successful porn film ever to be made.

Lohan’s friend, Hollywood photographer Tyler Shields, told RadarOnline.com: “Lindsay is ‘super-amped’ about the role of playing porn star Linda Lovelace.

“She is really attracted to the story of Lovelace’s life and the director really wants her to do it too.

“Lindsay thinks it is an amazing story and they are due to start filming it this summer in Los Angeles – I’ve been asked to do the photography for the poster and some on set shots too.

“I just spoke with Lindsay and she sounded really up-beat. She believes that this could be a really cool project to work on.”

The life story of Bronx born Boreman certainly has enough drama to potentially make a compelling movie.

Following the success of Deep Throat she denounced her pornography career claiming that she had been forced into it by her sadistic first husband before becoming a spokeswoman for the anti-porn movement.

She then went on to re-marry and have two children before controversially posing  as Linda Lovelace for Leg Show magazine in 2000.

Tragically, she was involved in a fatal car crash two years later, suffering massive trauma and internal injuries which resulted in her death.

Both Courtney Love and Anna Faris had been touted to play Lovelace before Lohan emerged as the front-runner.

In recent years as her personal life has been plagued with controversy her movie career has gone into a tail-spin too.

Most recently she was axed from The Other Side by director David Michaels before shooting even began.

In the film – which co-stars Woody Harrelson, Giovanni Ribisi, Dave Matthews and Alanis Morrisette – Lindsay would have played a grad student working on a desert island.

The firing reportedly took place because the The Other Side's financial backers were nervous about Lohan’s bankability at the box office.

Lohan has been missing from the big screen since 2007's psychological stripper flop I Know Who Killed Me and hasn't starred in a profitable film since 2004's Mean Girls.

Director Wilder – who helmed Your Name Here with Bill Pullman which still has not been released – reportedly wants Sam Rockwell to play opposite Lohan as one of her abusive husbands.
