"Because you think an explosion has taken place and you're looking at the shards and you say, 'Well, can we put this back together?'" Letterman said of his marriage to Regina Lasko, who he has a son with. "And by God, maybe you can put it back together. And maybe it won't be the same, but maybe it will be different, and maybe it can even be better in a different way.”

Letterman said the affair he had with a staffer “was stupid behavior. And you take a look at the explosion, and it knocks you down and you wake up every morning and you’re scared and you're depressed and sad, and you kind of got to let that knock you down and knock you down. And so right now, that's what we're doing, we're putting the thing back together to see what it's going to look like."

Letterman said he had great support from those close to him through the trying times.

"It was entertaining to me just to see all this going down," Letterman said of Leno's multiple attempts at smoothing over the situation, both on his show and in a subsequent interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Letterman also took a jab at Leno, mimicking  his trademark speech pattern in a whiny voice, and in reference to Leno's comment that both him and Conan got screwed by NBC, Letterman wondered aloud how Leno exactly got screwed.

"Conan got cancelled, you got the show!" Letterman said.
