If you’re just putting up an old vacation photo on your Facebook page  -- you know,  the one where you’re sunburned and your hair looks like a mop – it’s time to get serious. In this age of social networking, your photo is more important than ever.

We’ve complied some tips from the experts on how to take the perfect head shot.

First, let’s start with the hair:

Celebrity hairstylist Kevin Mancuso – who has worked on countless photo shoots with the likes of Natalie Portman, Naomi Watts, America Ferrara and Cindy Crawford to name a few – has some suggestions on how to create the perfect hair. Mancuso also appears regularly on Bravo’s TV show Sheer Genius and is the Creative Director for Nexxus Hair.

“In my experience, I’ve noticed that women either over do it or don’t do enough to prepare for a photo shoot. Try to go for a more natural look when preparing for your headshot to ensure the photograph captures the best and most beautiful version of you.”

Prepping Hair for the Shoot:

1) Try to get a trim or haircut a week or so before the shoot, so hair looks healthy.

2) If you color your hair, make sure your roots are done. You should also use a color protecting shampoo and conditioner before the shoot to maintain       the color and keep hair looking vibrant.

Styling the Day of the Shoot:

1)   Try pulling hair in front of shoulders for close shots to help elongate your face and instantly make you look thinner.

2)    Avoid tightly pulled back hair since it can make you look harsh and unapproachable.

1. Make sure to use a photo that actually looks like you!  Anyone who has ever used a dating site has probably experienced how

awkward it is when your date looks nothing like their photo.  In addition, use a recent photo.  If it's over a year old, it's probably time for a new one.

2. Use the right products for your skin.  If you wear makeup, try to go for a very natural/dewy look.  I like to put on a good tinted

moisturizer before taking a photo.  It will help even out your skin without making you look too made up.  Cream blush is also a  great option, as it adds life and youthfulness to your face. A touch of concealer under your eyes will wake them up and make you look very fresh.  Tinted lip balms are also a lovely way to make you look healthy.  Just make sure to keep it natural, and not Saturday night glam.
