Jay Leno might have survived the axe at NBC, but even on his 10pm swan song, he couldn't resist more vitriol at his employer.

The soon-to-be-again Tonight Show host had an arsenal of one-liners ready to fire during the last episode of the ill-fated The Jay Leno Show.

"It's hard to believe this is our last show," Leno said, his tongue firmly planted in cheek.

"There are so many wonderful memories from our time here at 10 o'clock."

In another taunt at The Peacock, Leno offered: "It was only five months ago I was telling NBC this show wasn't going to work."

And in a skit, Leno arrived at the studio to a sign which read: 'Leno, no parking after February 9.'

"I should have known this show wouldn't last, the first day i pulled into my parking place, I knew something wasn't right," Leno joked.

Even guest Ashton Kutcher got in on the act, claiming The Jay Leno Show was all a rouse: a punk'd.

With NBC's failed experiment ending tonight, Leno will not be put on ice for a couple of weeks while the network broadcasts the Winter Olympics from Vancouver.

Unlike his last farewell, a bittersweet and emotional send-off in which Leno honored his predecessor Johnny Carson, the TV king ended the show as it were another episode. "Your local news is next," he said.

But not before one more barb, direct via satellite from New York.

"I just wanted to tell you your bosses at nbc have asked me to pass on a special message to you," said Donald Trump.

"Because they don't have the guts to do it themselves.

"You're fired!"

For now, of course. Jay will be back, in a familiar time slot, in little time.
