The father of newly crowned Miss America, Caressa Cameron, has an arrest record, RadarOnline.com can reveal exclusively.

Jerome Allen Cameron, 53, was found guilty of the misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice on April 17, 2001 and sentenced to 90 days in the slammer. That sentence was suspended, but Cameron was fined $331.

The charge relates to a traffic incident in February 2001, on the grounds of the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

"Mr. Cameron was stopped for reckless driving," university police spokesperson George Farrar told RadarOnline.com.

"Mr. Cameron attempted to depart again.

"Upon the second attempt to leave, he was placed under arrest for obstruction of justice."

Mr. Cameron appealed the Fredericksburg General District Court's conviction to the Circuit Court, but later withdrew the contest.

When RadarOnline.com contacted Mr. Cameron, he refused to comment on his past other than to distance himself from his daughter's national commitments.

"Anything that is related to me, I consider it to be my personal and private life," Cameron told RadarOnline.com.

"Quite naturally, I understand, there will be people digging around my and others’ backgrounds, but my personal life has no reflection on her ability to do the job of Miss America."

When pressed further on the circumstances regarding his arrest, a steadfast Mr. Cameron refused to elaborate. But he indicated that he still maintained his innocence.

“Whatever has been alleged is just that, alleged," Mr Cameron added.

Cameron's 22-year-old daughter Caressa was crowned Miss America at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas last weekend.

The broadcast journalism student wooed judges by belting out Beyoncé's Listen from the film Dreamgirls and by telling kids to turn off the TV and to get outside and exercise during the interview segment of the competition.

“She is a child of God," Mr. Cameron told RadarOnline.com.

"I am truly blessed to be able to have her on loan from God for a while. Out of all the people in the world we are blessed to have her."
