Tonight Show host Conan O’Brien apologized to Levi Johnston on Thursday night, because of an earlier skit that featured Star Trek icon William Shatner reading a montage of bizarre Twitter quotes falsely attributed to the father of Sarah Palin's grandson.

“I’d like to apologize personally to Levi Johnston and his lawyer and publicist for misrepresenting him in any way,” O’Brien said. “Levi is clearly a great American. We wish him the best of luck as he trains for his upcoming naked photo shoot.”

O’Brien said that he found out early Thursday the Tweets were written by a “clever impostor," and "the real Levi is very angry with us now,” before bringing out the former Captain Kirk a second time to read a series of "lawyer approved" Johnston Tweets.

Conan, on Wednesday said, “All real, we did not make these up," before Shatner, waxing poetic, read a series of Tweets including: “Anyone know where I can get some good weed” and “"What’s the deal with the taxi drivers not speaking English, is there a law against it?"

As previously reported on RadarOnline.com, Johnston's rep had denied the authenticity of the messages, releasing the following statement: "My client, Levi Johnston, is being impersonated on your media (Twitter) and this is leading to libel and slanderous statements being attributed to him. ... We want you to put an immediate end to this illegal activity. ... You are being used as a medium to promote this illegality and we want immediate action. ... You are now on notice and must take steps to put an end to what is clearly against the law and against your policy. ... We want to know what steps you will be taking to correct what is clearly a problem which is escalating."

Johnston’s rep told us exclusively: “Levi has never ever possessed a Twitter account. He feels violated. He feels awful, but that's the nature of the beast. You've got to expect this stuff and take the good with the bad. He doesn't mind some of it but he has a real problem with someone being an outright liar.

EXCLUSIVE: Why Sarah Resigned As Governor

“I can't believe these people at the Tonight Show reporting this stuff without verifying their sources. They even had some actor to recite that crap on TV. They don't understand the legality of it. I'm going to see what they say on the show tonight and then we're going to decide what to do about it."
