CHP spokesperson Heather Hoglund said: “Texting and using a cell phone is a distraction which could cause a collision.

“We need both celebrities and parents to act as role models for their children and not to do these activities while they dive.

“In today’s society people are used to answering their phone straight way and they must fight that urge while they are behind the wheel.

“What California first lady Maria Shriver did was wrong but at least she apologized for her actions and we need everybody to be responsible not to use their cell or to text while they drive.

“People need to take advantage of the technology available to them if they have to make ‘hands free’ calls but ideally calls should only be made in emergencies.”

Ironically, it was her husband Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger who supported and signed a law last year banning the use of handheld communication devices while driving in California.

On average drivers are fined $20 when they are caught and when fines are processed through the courts they can be hit with additional fees varying from $79 to $300 depending on where they are stopped.
