Visitors of the Denver Zoo Colorado are anxiously waiting for the first glimpse of a rare okapi calf.

Born just last month the calf named Kalispell is only the fifth birth of this species at the zoo.

Her proud keepers are sheltering her from the eyes of the public until she gains a little more strength and stability.

A cross between zebras and giraffes the okapis were discovered 100 years ago in Africa and although it is not known how many exist in the wild  there are only 89 currently alive in captivity.
