Conan O'Brien -- new host of The Tonight Show -- paid tribute Tuesday night to Ed McMahon, the legendary 'second banana' to former Tonight Show host Johnny Carson.

Saying "this is obviously a very sad day without Ed", O’ Brien, the fourth in the line of Tonight Show hosts, dedicated a big portion of his monologue to McMahon, who died Tuesday at the age of 86.

Conan featured classic moments from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson whose laughter “was a soundtrack to that show.”  Conan also pulled a guest appearance from a 1993 episode of Late Night with Conan O’Brien when McMahon came to show the novice host and his sidekick Andy Richter “the ropes.”
