Daryl Hannah Arrested in Mining Protest

Actress Daryl Hannah has been arrested during a mining protest in West Virginia.

The Kill Bill star, 48, and around 30 protesters were taken into custody after they blocked a road into a coal mine in Raleigh County on Tuesday.

Hannah and her fellow demonstrators were protesting against plans to use the controversial method of mountaintop removal mining, which involves blasting the mountain summit off to expose coal seams.

The actress was arrested on misdemeanor charges of obstruction and impeding traffic.

Speaking at the rally outside a primary school near the Massey Energy subsidiary's coal processing plant, the actress spoke out for the cause.

She said: "There is no need to destroy our planet to power our future. I have been on renewable energy for about 20 years, so I know it works."

"It’s not necessary. If you do it wisely, there are ways to use renewables. It’s realistic for everybody."

Daryl and protesters were met by local miners, carrying signs reading "West Virginia miners say go home tree huggers".

The miners insist they would loose their jobs if the mountaintop removal mining was blocked.

Hannah  thanked the miners for their work, but insisted they could find employment in more environmentally-friendly power industries.

The Splash star is well-known for her environmental activism and was previously arrested in 2006 when she protested against the bulldozing of a dairy farm.
