Michael Phelps, the octo-gold medalist swimming superstar of last summer's Beijing Olympics, must really miss 2008.

The winningest Olympian ever, returning a nine-month break that included an amped-up appearance schedule and pot-related suspension, lost a pair of races at Charlotte UltraSwim, a weekend event in Charlotte, N.C.

The 23-year-old Baltimore native said that, despite losing, he was happy with the performance, his first since dominating last year's Olympics.

"The biggest thing that killed me were my turns and my finishes," Phelps said. "I'm not disappointed with that time, but the finish was awful. There's small things I need to work on. But overall, it was a good meet... for my first meet back, I have no complaints. We're on the right track." (Photo: Splash News)
