Angels And Demons Overtakes Star Trek For Top Box Office Spot

Tom Hanks' Angels And Demons, a thriller based on Dan Brown's novel, had a $152 million opening weekend worldwide, and the film's domestic $48 million take beat out incumbent Star Trek's $42 million second week.
The film garnered some poor reviews from critics, but that didn't seem to impact its financial success. Starring Tom Hanks as a Harvard academic-turned-Vatican savior, the Catholic church thriller fell short of matching the domestic $77 million opening its predecessor, The Da Vinci Code, took in during its 2006 opening weekend.

Despite the sluggish economy, the weekend box office was up a robust 16 percent from this time a year ago, on the heels of a blockbuster-packed summer slate. Rounding out the top five were X-Men Origins: Wolverine ($14.8 million), Ghosts of Girlfriends Past ($6.9 million) and Obsessed ($4.6 million).
