Actor Mel Gibson made an unexpected visit to St. Louis, MI., this week to attend a Catholic Bishops conference and ask church heads to keep him in their prayers.

"I was flabbergasted," Bishop Robert Shaheen of the Maronite Church told St. Louis station KPLR of seeing Gibson.

"He was very kind, very gracious...he never said anything about his personal life except 'keep me in your prayers; I'm going through a bad time in my life.'"

Gibson recently filed for divorce from his wife of 28 years, Robyn.

Last Wednesday Gibson dined on toasted ravioli with a group of Bishops, followed by breakfast on Thursday and a mass partially spoken in Aramaic, the language used in his film The Passion of The Christ.

Reports say he flew out on a private plane soon after.
