Two weeks ago, Miss California Carrie Prejean was just a beauty pageant hopeful.  Now, she's the protector of marriage.

Fresh off agreeing to be the public face for The National Organization for Marriage, Prejean continued her crusade against gay marriage on Thursday's Today Show.

"I'm gonna do whatever it takes to protect marriage," Prejean told Matt Lauer. "That's what I'm here to do."

"I never thought in a million years this would be happening," she said of the subsequent furor.

She said well-wishers have been stopping her on the street, remarking to her that "it had to take a beauty pageant contestant" to reinforce the marital virtues she knows to be true.

But some are fuming over her ongoing comments. "These ads are about one thing and one thing only: trying to make people afraid," said Neil G. Giuliano, President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), in an exclusive statement to RadarOnline.com. "They’re using the worn-out approach of trying to scare people into thinking the sky is falling.  They have nothing to do with marriage and everything to do with an anti-gay agenda that most Americans simply don’t believe in."
