Matt Lauer has just made his first public comment on his weekend bicycle accident that caused him to separate a shoulder when a deer jumped in his path.

The 51-year-old Today show co-host spoke briefly to RadarOnline.com as he walked into his NYC apartment building at 11:20 a.m.

Lauer -- wearing jeans, a button-down shirt and black jacket – had his arm in a blue sling.

“I’m doing OK,” Lauer said.

When asked about the accident, he said: “I was riding my bike outside my house in the Hamptons and a deer jumped out in front of me.”

Lauer confirmed to RadarOnline.com that he was scheduled to undergo surgery on his separated shoulder later this afternoon.

Lauer’s Today show partner Meredith Vieira broke news of the accident on the show this morning, joking on air that Lauer thinks the deer was hired by the competition.

With Lester Holt filling in for Lauer, Vieira said: “Matt’s banged up with a displaced shoulder, it popped out. So hopefully he’ll be on the mend soon.”
