Despite the glut of vampire-themed TV shows, novels, and movies, Twilight still has some serious bite. The first adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s #1 New York Times best-selling series is moody, stylish, and sexy, thanks to the chemistry between the two leads, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

Stewart plays Bella Swan, a loner high school student who moves from sunny Arizona to gloomy Fork, Washington, to live with her dad. But instead of falling in with the friendly teens who play volleyball and talk about the prom, Bella falls in love with her mysterious lab partner, Pattinson’s Edward Cullen, a pale hottie who stares at her with longing in his eyes and bloodlust in his heart.

Of course, Edward’s big secret is that he’s really a 100-year-old vampire, which is kind of obvious from his bright, red lips and pointy, Count Chocula ears. Luckily for Bella, Edward and his family have chosen to be “vegetarians” and try desperately to repress their violent urges to drink human blood. But there are three more bloodsuckers lurking about in the Pacific Northwest, who have made Bella their prey. So Edward’s kind of stressed out because he’s got to keep his own murderous cravings under control, while also keeping Bella safe from the other immoral immortals.

Twilight, directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), is lovely to look at — and current. Goth is nowhere to be found here. Edward may be undead but he has cute clothes, drives a sporty Volvo, and Googles. The movie isn’t exactly scary, but there is enough suspense to warrant excitement about the next installment New Moon.

The Two-Disc Special Edition DVD’s extras aren’t thrilling, but include audio commentary by Hardwicke, Stewart and Pattinson, music videos, a behind-the-scenes documentary and interviews from Comic-Con.    3 Radars
