Late last night, the Screen Actors Guild and studio execs broke off talks that were supposed to pin down a new contract for film and many TV actors.

The problem was the duration of the deal. The union wants it to end 2 years, 3 months from now. The producers want a 3 year contract.

The studios say this is necessary to give them the ability to plan and budget with certainty during rough economic times. They add that they've given their best and final offer and it will be on the table for just 60 days. After that, they have to start all over.

The union had no comment, but "strike" is definitely in the air. Actors have been working without a new contract since June.

A 2007-8 strike by the Writers Guild cost the industry and Los Angeles an estimated $2 billion.
