Johnny Carson was as miserable as a man could be, says his longtime friend, lawyer, manager and agent Henry Bushkin. Bushkin is peddling a tell-all book about the Tonight Show host, delving into his depression, infidelities, and family problems.

"Many great comedians were miserable human beings," Bushkin told The New York Post. "His mother couldn't give a compliment. He's the biggest star in the world and she couldn't even acknowledge it."

Carson also had a shaky relationship with his son, Rick, who was committed to Bellevue with terrible emotional problems.

"The kid was there for 4 months and he (Carson) never went," Bushkin said. "I had to take care of everything and was there almost every day."

Bushkin ultimately sums up Carson's life in a way that the lives of many legendary artists can be:

"He was a great star, but not a great man."
