Washington Post Co. Finds Its Root

WEB-BASED Gates (Photo: Getty Images) The Washington Post Co. launched today, a new Web magazine with an African American focus. It aims to be "Slate for black readers," according to Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., who is one of the site's founders.
Like the Washington Post Co.–owned Slate, The Root will feature news, commentary, art, and sports coverage, but with a focus on black issues and work by acclaimed black writers. It also has a genealogy application allowing allows users to, yes, trace their roots.
