HIS JEST, HER CHEST Mayer, Simpson

After Jessica Simpson turned up acting all cuddly-like with John Mayer at a pair of New Year's Eve parties, fans of Mayer looked to his blog for an explanation. That, after all, was where he'd posted a message warning "Don't believe the hype" after tabloids linked him to Simpson last fall.

On Sunday, the smoky-voiced blues-rocker finally published a confession ... of sorts. "I want to share with you only one fragment of the phase I've had in New York City in the last 15 days, but something too special to keep to myself," he writes.

Mayer goes on to say he had long been harboring a secret "passion," until several months ago, when "I decided I was going to shut my eyes and go for it."

That passion, of course, is stand-up comedy.

"I think most people have a hard time getting their head around it, because there's no career template for a singer/songwriter/comedy writer," he writes. "Also because it's a dumb idea. But I've been sticking with it in hopes that it takes me to a new level, creatively." He concludes by thanking a number of comedians who offered him advice and encouragement during his appearances at Manhattan's Comedy Cellar, including Dave Attell, Sherrod Small, and Louis CK.

With no mention made of Simpson, one can only hope he's saving his Daisy Duke material until after the breakup.
