Alaska and Hawaii historically hold a different position than Missouri, Iowa, or Kansas on the strategic military map. Alaska and Hawaii are on the border of the US military might, and Alaska is the only US Territory that has ever been invaded by a foreign army (WWII). I think the average reader is probably unaware of the strategic importance of Alaska's national guard, but it is bigger than 95% of most country's military forces. She was asked a serious question, and in this context, given an opportunity to defend a previously asinine answer, but instead gave an even more asinine answer, showing only that A: She wasn't taking the question seriously, and B: She didn't have a good, or even remotely relevant answer.
