MOSS GATHERS ELLIES New York's Adam Moss
Being the universally acknowledged best magazine in existence is all well and good—until you stumble.
Despite the numerous winners at last night's National Magazine Awards, all anyone wants to talk about this morning is the New Yorker, which went in with nine nominations and left empty-handed. It was the first time the title has failed to win an Ellie (as the awards are known) since 1999. Maybe EIC David Remnick should've stopped by the pet store for a few sacrificial puppies beforehand?
Taking up the New Yorker's slack was New York magazine, which won five Ellies, including one for General Excellence in its circulation category.
In the evening's other big piece of news, Glamour editor Cindi Leive announced from the podium that Mark Whitaker is leaving Newsweek, where he's an online executive and former top editor, to join NBC News.
