New York Times To Embrace Staff iPhones

In a stunning company-wide e-mail this morning, the IT nerds of the New York Times made a major announcement. Later this summer and into next year, the company will be changing its e-mail system to Microsoft Exchange—which means, they note, that while BlackBerries will of course be supported, employees will also be able to get company e-mail via "other popular devices such as the iPhone and Treo." The great marketplace barrier for the iPhone has been that few large companies—certainly not law and securities firms—offer support for the trendy proprietary Apple products. Apple and the Times have had a close corporate relationship: The paper appears in ads for the iPhone, in which its website is displayed on-screen, and Apple has taken massive ad buys on the paper's website. Now, crazily enough, employees will actually be able to use the products!
