Members of D.C.'s venerable Metropolitan Club are itching for the chance to swiftboat Donald Rumsfeld's application for membership.

One anti-Rummy Met Club member tells RadarOnline.com that a shock-and-awe letter-writing campaign to the club's board to take down Rumsfeld's nomination is already in the works, despite the club's preference for boldface names (Evan Thomas, Chris Matthews, and Robert McNamara are all members). Says the member, "We're a social club, not a business club. But Rumsfeld is so defined by that abrasive public persona, it's going to be tough for people to be around him socially. In the end, he's just not the kind of guy we want around here.... People are going to go to the mattresses over this."

While an individual member cannot derail an applicant's membership, the club's board takes into consideration letters from Met Club-ers before voting whether to induct new members. RadarOnline.com's source says a similar campaign almost sank Matthews's bid for membership, and that if two board members vote no, Rumsfeld will see his bid go the way of, well, Baghdad.
