Project Runway: Ohno, Jennifer!

The stress fissures are starting to show on Project Runway, as the maddening pace of the challenges begins to take its toll on even the happiest contestants. In last night's episode the designers were asked to create women's outfits befitting of the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Games. There to guest judge was two-time Olympian, Apollo Ohno?, who not for nothing, has lost an Anton since the last time he walked in an Opening Ceremony. Just saying.

Though not specifically mandated, the challenge basically asked designers to create sportswear, a genre many of them were not entirely comfortable or familiar with, which provided ample room for frustrations to show. Joe started early, snapping at Daniel for not knowing he has been using a specific sewing machine all season and weirdly accused him of being self-centered for not paying attention to what other contestants have been doing at all times. He punctuated that by saying there was drama because there were "too many queens around." Keep in mind, Joe heralds from the booming Detroit fashion scene. Welcome to New York, old man. Meanwhile, Kenley's high-pitched laugh seems to be grating on the entire workroom, as it never ceases, even when everyone is trying their hardest to concentrate. In a preview for next week's show, her laughter actually seems to spill over onto the runway during judging—and she seems to get in trouble for it. Could be interesting.

After the runway show, Terri, Joe (despite his use of the ever-questionable skort), and eventual winner Korto were deemed the top three for making their outfits sporty enough for athletes, yet stylish enough for the world stage. The victory was especially symbolic for Korto, who originally hails from Liberia and shared her story of moving to America after her family's exile from the country at the start of its civil war. Very American Dream.

The bottom three, on the other hand, were more American nightmare. Having been able to visit the New York Armory Track & Field Center's museum prior to the challenge to look at outfits from past years, it was clear that Jerell, Daniel, and Jennifer gotstuck there, presenting looks so far off the mark they prompted Michael Kors to exclaim, "It's like they heard the challenge in another language."

Jerell was immediately sent back to safety for his outfit, which ever-quotable Blayne succinctly described as "something off the Titanic." At least he used red, white and blue. That left Daniel's so-blue-it's-purple cocktail dress standing against emotionless Jennifer's boring navy cardigan and gold skirt combo. Ultimately, the judges decided that Jennifer had to go, for her inability to separate the challenges from her own personal tastes. Once again touting the "surrealism" she has yet to demonstrate, she skated off quietly, presumably to be surreal somewhere in Boring Land.
