Chuck Todd Alludes to Maybe-gay Charlie Crist?

It has to be said that MSNBC's coverage of the Democratic bash has been boffo so far. Alpha douches Keith Olbermann, Joe Scarborough, David Shuster, and Chris Matthews are together proving how much more entertaining cable news can be when on-air personalities don't conceal their smoldering hatred for one another. And Luke Russert has impressed while chipping in as the affable rich kid who has no business being there. Now, actual smart person and distinguished Radar fave Chuck Todd has jumped into the freewheeling fray by coming dangerously close to going there regarding rumors that Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is a gay guy who recently got engaged to a woman to enhance his prospects in the John McCain veepstakes.

In the clip above (did you not know it was clip day at Radar?), you'll see how this morning's boring conversation about the history of unmarried presidents or vice presidents (or mostly, lack of history) veers into uncharted territory when the normally mild-mannered Todd suggests that Crist's "engagement might be off if he's not the running mate." You might not be aware of the exact context which makes this such a loaded comment if you've got better things to do than catalog unproven rumors about the personal lives of politicians, but it's clear from the reaction of his on-air colleagues (Andrea Mitchell: "You are so cold. That was so mean.") that they know exactly what he's talking about. Stay tuned for a possible Chuck Todd apology on this one.

I would've preferred: "If Crist doesn't get the VP nod, he's shaving off his beard - if you know what I mean."
