< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Britons Almost As Ignorant About America As Most Americans
A poll of nearly 2,000 Britons by YouGov/PHI found that 70 per cent of respondents incorrectly said it was true that the US had done a worse job than the European Union in reducing carbon emissions since 2000. More than 50 per cent presumed that polygamy was legal in the US, when it is illegal in all 50 states. Before you get on your high horse about the UK's dismal knowledge concerning all things American, ask yourself: Could I answer similar questions about Britain? For instance, what's the nation's favorite sport? If you answered anything other than "complaining about Polish immigrants," you're wrong. (Although we would have also accepted "stabbing.") You see, correct American perceptions about Britain are a lot like an Englishman's teeth: few and far between. Let that be a lesson to you. I have a suspicion us Brits (Scots in my case !) know a trifle more about America than vice versa - probably due to US geopolitical domination. But it's only a suspicion and I have very little to back up my assertion. One thing I know is the average man on the American street is many times more articulate in his use of the English language than his counterpart here in the U.K. As for the morons who think polygamy is legal in the States, I would have to concede these very same people would probably be struggling to know about Mitt Romney's faith. Come to think about it, they'd be struggling to know who Mitt Romney is in the first place.
