Hancock: Love It or Hate It, Those Are Your Only Choices

will_smith_hancock2.jpg
Not sure if you've heard, but apparently Will Smith has some longstanding relationship with the Fourth of July and huge movies. Well, be on the lookout, because Big Willy might have a breakup in store.

Smith's Hancock comes out today and is expected to top $100 million over the long holiday weekend. But we're not so sure. The reviews as a whole are pretty bad. But then again, some of them are glowing. But then again again some of them are pretty damn harsh. We're not quite sure what to make of the action/comedy/commentary on America's role in the world, so we won't make anything of it, we'll just show you how polarized the reviews are and let you make your own damn choice:

THE BAD
• "Not even Smith's charisma can mitigate the chaos that is Hancock."—Chicago Tribune

• "This movie fails so spectacularly—and on so many levels—that it's like watching a train plummet off a bridge."—New York Post

• "It's a strange feeling to see the summer's most promising premise self-destruct into something bizarre and unsatisfying, but that is the Hancock experience."—Los Angeles Times

• "The superhero genre screams for a makeover, or at least a smart deconstruction, but Hancock isn't that movie. It just ups the foolishness ante."—Newsweek

• "Remember Wild Wild West? Well..."—Seacoast Online

THE GOOD
• "Bateman doesn't make a false move, and a stellar Charlize Theron springs her own bolts from the blue as Ray's wife. As for Smith, he's on fire. There's nothing like a star shining on his highest beams. You follow him anywhere."—Rolling Stone

• "Hancock makes for one unexpectedly satisfying and kinky addition to Hollywood's superhero chronicles. Touching and odd, laden with genuine twists and grounded by three appealing lead performances."—New York Times

• "Hancock suggests new visual directions and emotional tonalities for pop. It's by far the most enjoyable big movie of the summer."—New Yorker

• "Hancock is the sort of Fourth of July cinematic fireworks celebration Hollywood dreams about but rarely achieves."—Detroit News

• "A rollicking tale of rehabilitation and redemption, rife with cool special effects, Hancock is smart and surprisingly raunchy."—Philadelphia Inquirer
