The Blogger Career Trajectory

willleitch.jpeg
MR. BAD EXAMPLE Leitch
"I'm sure we'll use the example of Will's career trajectory in recruiting new writers to Gawker titles"—Nick Denton, on the departure of Deadspin founding editor Will Leitch for New York magazine. But what is the actual post-Gawker career trajectory like? Let's go down the list!

Elizabeth Spiers: Columnist for Fortune; about to blog about her month in Cambodia.
Choire Sicha: Freelancing and guest-blogging for two weeks on Radar. After that? Uh....
Jessica Coen: Deputy online editor, New York.
Matt Haber: Blogging and writing for the Observer.
Jesse Oxfeld: Editing front-of-book packages for New York.
Alex Balk: Executive editor, Radaronline.com.
Emily Gould: Was blogging for Mediabistro; currently M.I.A.
Josh Stein: Society editor for Page Six Magazine.
Doree Shafrir: Reporter for the New York Observer.
Richard Morgan: Freelancer, New York and New York Times.
Andrew Krucoff: Web Content Developer, 92nd Street Y.
Ana Marie Cox: Time.com blogger, freelancer.
John Clarke, Jr.: Recently spent a week guest-blogging for Portfolio.
Megan Carpentier: Freelance blogger for Glamour, Cynic's Party, Jezebel.
Will Leitch: Columnist for New York.
Mark Lisanti: Tumbling.
Chris Mohney: Online editor for BlackBook.
Remy Stern: Building something online.
David Lat: Blogger, Above the Law
Brian Raftery: Author of a book about karaoke!
Jennifer Gerson: Editor of Polo.com.
Lockhart Steele: Runs a blog network.
Maggie Shnayerson: Blogs occasionally.
Pete Rojas: Runs a digital music label.
Joel Johnson: Freelance technology writer, blogs about gadgets for Boing Boing.

By this we can see that the career trajectory for Gawker Media bloggers most frequently involves blogging and/or running blogs and also massive job instability, some of it self-generated, some of it surely economy-generated.

(Additions to this list welcome.)

Two weeks at Radar? Sweet mother of all that's holy and servicey.

Thankfully, it's "Cynics' Party." That apostrophe placement was hard-won, let me tell you.

This is where the Gawker Commenter Meet-Up Afterparty is happening, by the way.

Balk, bring paper cups. And a tarp.

It's sad that I don't even have to look that up anymore.

Also, Lisanti's tumblr is worth a few clicks. (http://marklisanti.tumblr.com) He uh, reblogs me sometimes. (Well, when I'm not just obsessively reblogging Balk... from the safety of my tarp.)

And Choire, don't forget you are also a CHAMPION TWITTERER - and one of my faves! Surely this will translate into massive personal wealth any day. (At least, that's what I told my dad.)
