Remember when Tina Brown had that Washington Post column and that chatty T.V. show and there was all that buzz attached to her and we'd read her column and giggle and link to it and our interns would tell us what funny thing Tina said to David Carr on her show because we were too busy to watch it but not too busy to have someone watch it for us? Now Tina Brown is busy building a website with Barry Diller that is maybe not at all a good idea and we hardly hear from her and she's been supplanted by turn-around conservative and Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan, who has now been captured in her full glory by Jacob Bernstein in a delicious profile.

Which of course begins with Peggy regretting the profile and typing—dollars to donuts from an AOL account!—an email begging Jacob to kill the piece:

You are a doll. I have to admit to second thoughts, none of which are connected to you. What I have been thinking each day is this: I really want the column to speak for me. Because it's better at speaking for me than I am. The thing about writing is that, as you of course know, it requires—and allows—reflection and consideration and figuring out what you really think, what you really want to say. And each week I try to get to that, sometimes getting there and sometimes not. But when I talk I find myself more inclined to pop off, or go for a joke, or attempt to entertain, or fill silence lest silence be misunderstood....In the weeks after we spoke I sort of winced at things I'd said.

And then there is a long list of lefties who love Peggy "Points of Light" Noonan now—many of them of course only love her because she is the official anti-Hillary Clinton and it gives them gratification to have a woman who hates Hillary for them. But! Also they do because Peggy is just kind of awesome and now everyone reads her column every week and Tina is in endless phone conferences with Barry's people and web designers, probably saying "Make it pop more! Oh wait, darling, can we make it blink or something?" Yes, they can make it blink. That would have saved Newser.com—more blinking!

Though of course Tina will win in the end because actually it is 1997 outside and Peggy is living in 2004, which is brilliant for right now but will be a problem come September, when it is 1998 already.
