Pesky Fairness Monitors Restricting Networks' Freedom To Say Stupid Things

DRAMA Fox News Crawl
The Wall Street Journal notes the increased scrutiny facing television news outlets in an age of "self-appointed watchdogs, including organized groups like Media Matters and individuals. These watchdogs are likely to remain vigilant about gaffes, misstatements and potentially biased language through the November vote." What types of misstatements are these nitpicky vigilantes going after?

Let's start with the Fox News Channel crawl above, which refers to the wife of the Democratic presidential candidate as "Obama's baby mama," a phrase which, the Journal helpfully points out, refers to "the mother of a man's child, who is not his wife nor (in most cases) his current or exclusive partner." Expect to see a lot more of this throughout the campaign, which is actually a good thing: It's really going to raise the bar for the folks at Fox, who are going to need to come up with creative new methods of coded racism when they disparage the nominee and his family.

Comments

It's like when Geraldine Ferraro protested that you can't complain about black people without being called a racist. Damn watchdogs.

"Ms. Malkin, who is noted for trenchant criticism..." Really, WSJ? Perhaps in addition to looking up "baby momma" in the OED, you should look up "trenchant."
