And, Yes, We're Including Whip-Smart In That

WHEN SHE WAS GOOD Exile
To men and women of a certain age, musician Liz Phair will always hold a special place for the sheer indie ballsiness of her iconic debut album, Exile In Guyville, which came out—Jesus Christ, really?—fifteen years ago. On the eve of Tuesday's reissue of the record, Phair sat down for an interview with Time Out Chicago. It got a little intense. Here are the first six questions she was asked:

• Do you ever feel burdened by your early success with Guyville?
• A lot of fans and critics have been disappointed in your work since that album. Do you share that sense of disappointment at all?
• Some say, "Phair had something with Guyville and then she let it go." What do you do with that?
• What about the criticism that what made you musically distinctive gave way to a desire to make hits?
• Well, my question wasn't really how do you feel about people hating you. It's: What do you think about that criticism of your music?
• Your music took a turn to pop--

Phair handles it pretty well ("Like, honestly, I don't spend a lot of time worrying about this stuff. It doesn't feel great, it's not fun, but at the same time, like, am I really gonna go out and fight all those battles?"), perhaps due to years of practice. And, to be fair to her interlocutor, the interview is pegged to the reissue, so it's a natural subject to ask about. Also to be fair to her interlocutor, everything she's done since her debut has totally sucked. We'd probably have gone the same way. [Via Stereogum]

Oh Balk, do you do this to hurt me?

No, Liz did it just to hurt you. Particularly the self-titled one.

you have the nerve to say all her other albums totally suck when blender is like the same magazine which raves about katy perry and lily allen and that love song girl? whip-smart is amazing. it has the intense "jealousy", the eerie "alice springs", the droning "shane" and the buzz pop candy that is "supernova". it also has "dogs of l.a." and a lot of other songs which rival the best of today's indie pop. it certainly has more personality that cat power's jukebox and feist' reminder. what world are you living in? and whitechocolatespaceegg is jampacked with ideas, genres and great lyrical twists. exile in guyville is one part of a trio of superior records this great singer songwriter released. the only misstep was when she started collaborating with people lesser than her. man, listen to the pop songs today and then listen to liz's work. wcse does not sound dated at all. w-s is still pretty good. eig is amazing. come back to me when you get a new pair of ears. ugh!

Holy shit, I had no idea I was working for Blender! I'm never going to be free of Tyler, am I?

Blasphemy!
Whitechocolatespaceegg rules.
Matador didn't push it at all and poor Liz got frustrated and then hired the Matrix, let a girl try to pay her bills, damn.

oh wait, this is radar. sorry, so similar to the blender. i was temporarily confused by your insane claims.
hating on w-s and wcse when he probably hasn't listened to these records for years.
wrong, period. forever.

go listen to feist or something. yeesh.

i'm a huge fan of phair, though not a so much of her reverse evolution. it's an old story, a tired invective, and interviews like this one (time out) tell more about the interviewer than it does shed light on guyville - how it was made, who liz was at the time, and what it all meant. she's answered all the 'career suicide' questions before, and I for one would rather read something original than more of the same old. it seems lazy to just keep reiterating the already relentlessly-covered tale of hipster betrayal.
